Hate Crimes Against LGBT Community on the Rise

There are those who say that we're living in an age of knowledge. That through our intellect we have learned more than any other generation before us. I've heard it said that with the advances in technology the world is rapidly evolving into a global village. Obstacles such as distance and time are quickly becoming obsolete. We're quick to praise ourselves for our correctness and acceptance. Our egos never tire from our acknowledgement of superiority over our ancestors. Yet, through all of this self-congratulatory behaviour there still remains ignorance and hate.

The video posted above details such depravity. Brandon White, the victim who came forward to identify himself, is shown being jumped by three members of a gang who call themselves Jack City. He was brutally beaten by gang members while at least eight others watched for police and recorded the attack. The video was uploaded to this website by the gang.

While the attack is deplorable it is by no means uncommon. According to a study released by the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs hate crimes against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered (LGBT) community has risen 23% from 2009. Evidence of this is not difficult to find. I came across these comments beneath a YouTube video showing Brandon White speaking to the press only two days ago.

If you're a member of the LGBT community and need to talk to someone please visit this website to connect to people who can help. The It Gets Better campaign is a program built by those who believe that things can get better and offer many resources to ensure that no one is left suffering. For more information and videos about this story click here

  1. I'm glad you posted about this Brad. I don't think that these hate crimes get the attention they deserve.

  2. It's great to see the support for the LGBT community out there with programs like It Gets Better and all the anti-bullying campaigns. But it's also mind-blowing how often these people still suffer from hate crimes. It's especially shocking that hate crimes against the LGBT community have risen since 2009. Where's the love, people?
